Biáng Biáng (also biángbiáng miàn or just biángbiáng), the famous hand-pulled noodles from Shaanxi Province in northwestern China (especially the city of Xi'an), can become so wide they almost need their own arrondissement.

Onomatopoeic, biáng biáng mimics the distinct slapping sound made as the thick, wheat dough gets thrown down and slammed, over and over, against the chef’s work counter, then pulled into wide, translucent ribbons of kuandai mian - literally "belt noodles." Traditionally topped with scallions, garlic, chili flakes and finished with a lashing of smoking-hot oil, they turn a cold-weather evening into the reason cold-weather evenings exist. - BPJ

Warhol Wednesday

Caricature, self-mockery, whimsy: these were the leitmotifs of Andy Warhol's work, yet his true genius lay in transforming the disposable icons of postwar American consumer culture into enduring works of high art. With cool detachment and sly humor, he elevated the banal - Campbell’s soup cans, Brillo boxes. He endlessly repeated portraits of Marilyn Monroe, Elvis, and Jackie Kennedy into cool, silkscreened meditations on fame, mass production, and the blurring of art and commerce. Working from his silver-walled Factory, surrounded by a revolving cast of Superstars, drag queens, socialites, and misfits, Warhol turned celebrity itself into both subject and performance, while his deadpan public persona - wigged, soft-spoken, and famously declaring that everyone would be famous for fifteen minutes - became inseparable from the work. In doing so, he permanently altered the relationship between popular culture and fine art, leaving behind a dazzling visual vocabulary and a lasting template for how irony, image, and identity could be endlessly reproduced, packaged, and sold. - BPJ
